In 2005 Alcatel-Lucent began its 100G research and officially kicked off the 100G era in 2007 with industry first field trials across both the IP and Optical domains. Alcatel-Lucent continued to make progress, leveraging the expertise of Bell Labs, and conducted the world’s first 100G coherent optical field trial in 2009 using the PDM-QPSK modulation format — using for that test a 1,088-kilometer link in Telefónica’s network between Madrid and Merida, Spain.
Based on a half-decade of research and real-world testing, Alcatel-Lucent brought the industry’s first complete, commercial 100G coherent optical solution to market in 2010. That same year, Alcatel-Lucent became first in the industry to deliver 100 GE service routing interfaces that unleashed the power of 100G Ethernet for the metro, service edge and core of IP networks. Leveraging successive generations of breakthrough silicon innovation, Alcatel-Lucent continues to propel the industry in accelerating deployments of 100GE throughout service provider networks.

100 Gigabit Ethernet: Speed without compromising services
Alcatel-Lucent was first to market with 100GE service routing interfaces that can be deployed anywhere in your transport network: in the metro, at the service edge and in the core. At the heart of the solution is the industry’s first 100G processor chipset — based on homegrown Alcatel-Lucent silicon innovation. Deployed in the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router and 7450 Ethernet Service Switch platforms, that chipset provides efficient 100G IP service routing for the full range of residential, business and mobile services. The Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager provides the oversight needed to manage all of this effortlessly from end to end, across all domains of a converged core network — propelling you beyond traditional boundaries by offering cross-layer visibility and manageability between the IP and optical transport domains.

The Alcatel-Lucent single-carrier 100G coherent optical solution couples coherent detection with advanced digital signal processing algorithms and optimized multi-level modulation formats, improving performance with near-constant signal amplitude. It’s an impressive package that can simultaneously handle native 10G, 40G and 100G wavelengths — allowing you to easily and cost-effectively migrate your network infrastructure without sacrificing performance or having to excessively reengineer.
Operating on the flagship 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) platform, Alcatel-Lucent 100G next-generation coherent technology gives new and existing networks greater capacity while preserving bandwidth efficiency and mimicking the flexibility, automation and rapid time-to-service capabilities of electrical-based transport networks. With release 4.0, the 1830 PSS product family has evolved to a new-generation core optical switch that supports not only dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM), but also a terabit optical transport network (OTN) switch.
